2. Computer Usage @ Work — Use the Web
or a recent newspaper/magazine to locate three additional unique usages of
computer technology in sports (241). What makes the use of these technologies
unique to sports?
1. Assisting
the Umpires / Referees
Most
professional sports in the United States have long used instant replay and
other high-tech aids to help referees make the right call. Gridiron has used
video replay systems to check referees' calls for many years. Basketball
referees use replay systems to make sure players are shooting within the time
allotted by the shot clock. In international cricket, the third umpire has been
used, one sitting off the ground with access to TV replays of certain
situations (such as disputed catches and boundaries) to advise the central
umpires. The umpires out on the field are in communication via wireless
technology with the other umpire. The third umpire is also asked to adjudicate
on run out decisions, which he makes without consultation with the two central
umpires. One sport that has resisted the use of high-tech assistance is
soccer/football. Replays could be used to decide off-side decisions, whether a
ball passes over the goal line, and clarify penalty decisions.
2. Hawk-Eye
Technology
Hawk-eye is
the name of a computer and camera system which traces a ball's trajectory. It
is being used in international cricket and tennis, and many other sports are also looking at making use
of this technology. The system is also being trialled in soccer as part of the
goal line assessment. The Premier League of Football in the UK has agreed to
the introduction of goal-line sensors after being given approval by football's
rule-makers. The system being developed by the UK company Hawk-Eye, would give
a definitive decision on whether the ball had crossed the line. The Hawk Eye
uses a camera taking 600 frames a second on the goal-line, with the information
is analyzed by computer and sent to the referee's headset or a device on his wrist.
3. Computer Software
There
are numerous software
packages that
are designed for fitness and nutrition professionals to organize data and
produce reports, ideal for visitors to this site. Here are a couple of packages
that come recommended by Topend Sports.
- Team Beep Test — the most versatile and useful software
for conducting and recording results of the bleep / beep test, with
results recorded directly onto your computer.
- BodyByte — a universal standalone computer
software program specially developed to comprehensively organize and
manage all the information associated with nutrition, training and
fitness.

of the Online Social Networks and Media Sharing sites (128) and outline the
information on each Web site and the possible uses for each Web site.

MySpace
1. Meeting
people from across the globe: MySpace is a collection of people from all across the world and includes
people from various professions, races, cultures and religions. It thus opens
up a lot of vistas to get to know new people and network with old friends and
acquaintances who are unreachable. This kind of networking and interaction
encourages people to improve their understanding and knowledge base with
respect to regions and cultures across the globe.
2. Cultural
learning: All of us
grow up in a singular culture normally inculcated by our parents and family. As
a result, we are not knowledgeable about other cultures that exist. MySpace
puts members in touch with diverse cultures and religions thus improving
understanding and knowledge. This is done on MySpace through discussions and
chats that are a part of its culture.
3. Connecting
offline: Due to
MySpace befriending a lot of connections come face to face in real life
resulting in great interaction and traditional networking. Although MySpace
integrates communities across the world, it is easy to find friends in one’s
own geographical area. If a member is a traveler, having friends at different
geographical areas is a distinct advantage for securing information as well as
social company.
4. Building
businesses: Although
MySpace is a social platform it is a great tool to network for building
business, especially those that involve multi-level marketing. Moreover,
getting to know people from various countries encourages professional
relationships in the form of partnerships and representation to build and
expand businesses geographically.
5. Job
opportunities: Many
organizations are always scouting for good talent and MySpace is one of the
places they look to for good people. A good profile and a detailed bio on
MySpace is thus a good gateway to a great employment opportunity. Also, since
many organizations do have a MySpace profile through the employee network, it
is easy to find a dream job here than going through the rigmarole of using
Monster.com or any other job search site. It is highly entertaining as well as
paying.
6. Size: MySpace is of the biggest and
oldest social networks on the internet today and more often than not, a member
can find who he or she searches for. Compared to other social networking
website, MySpace is also the most visited, so the number of dormant members on
MySpace is quite small.
7. Multimedia: A lot of multimedia features are
available all across MySpace and what is more interesting is that they can be
used for free on member’s websites. Contributing to this collection can be fun
and interesting.
8. Editing: MySpace profile is highly
customizable and a member can add almost anything to it using Java and HTML
editing features.
9. Communication: MySpace offers a variety of
communication features to its member that include email, instant messaging,
forums, blogs, groups and bulletin boards that can be used to keep in touch with
friends and family at almost no cost at all.
Media Sharing sites
1.
Youtube
1. No need to be home to watch. Moreover, not even a TV is necessary!
Laptops, tablets and smartphones are devices that have entered the daily life
of millions of people, and Internet access through public Wi Fi networks, 3G
and other technologies are very popular now. Watching videos on the network is
accessible from anywhere.
2. YouTube is free. You only need a registration
and a few minutes to personalize your channel to begin to share your ads. The
channel personalization offers good opportunities to promote the brand, as well
as subscription and comments! Cool, right? Moreover, it will cost you nothing!
3. More effective
advertising. Many
people switch to another channel while commercials are running and ads
themselves are considered annoying. On the other hand, a good, funny or
original advertisement is shared by people over the network and is considered a
form of entertainment. Shared by a friend, an advertisement can be considered a
recommendation of the product itself. The experience is very different.
4. Some people do not watch
TV regularly. An
increasing number of young people are not watching TV, replacing it with the
Internet. Control over the content, the opportunity for interaction and
participation in information flow are valuable advantages that can be exploited
not only by users, but also by marketing and advertising professionals.
5. Diversity of content. There are several ways in
which your video can reach the target group – searching for content using a
keyword, as an option for a similar video after the user has seen a certain
video. Thus, by only one search, a user can see your other advertisements or
just visit your channel and subscribe to it!
6. Always 'on'. YouTube is available 24 hours
a day, seven days a week, always online, regardless of time zone. The best part
is that once watched, the video can be viewed repeatedly and saved as a
favourite video.
7. User survey. Very often, people prefer to
see the product in advance, and a clip or a video advertisement can
"bring" the product to them. In addition, the views of other users
are a very strong motivating factor for the purchase decision!
8. YouTube has more freedom. You can watch a lot of ads
that were not allowed to air for one reason or another. On YouTube, there are
significantly fewer restrictions and often, particularly these ads enjoy great
interest.
9. Links can be put in
YouTube. In the
description of the video, you can put a link to your website, the facebook page
of your company ... to wherever you want!
10. Anyone can record a
video -
making a video for YouTube is considerably cheaper. You do not need a huge
budget to be there. On the contrary - the more easy-going and
"amateur" the video is, the more credible it is to the users. See how
many videos and channels taken with an ordinary camera have enjoyed immense
popularity.
2. Flickr
1. Accounts
Flickr
offered two types of accounts, Free and Pro. Free accounts were limited in data
storage, accessibility, and interaction. Pro accounts received unlimited
bandwidth and storage, and allowed users to upload an unlimited number of
images and videos every month. New Pro accounts are no longer offered, but old
ones remain active; there are no plans to retire Pro accounts
2. Organization
Organizr
is a web application for organizing photos within a Flickr
account that can be accessed through the Flickr interface. It allows users to
modify tags, descriptions, and set groupings, and to place photos on a world
map (a feature provided in conjunction with Yahoo Maps). It uses Ajax to emulate the look, feel, and quick
functionality of desktop-based photo-management applications, such as Google's Picasa and F-Spot.
Users can select and apply changes to multiple photos at a time, making it a
better tool for batch editing than the standard Flickr interface.
3. Access
control
Flickr
provides both private and public image storage. A user uploading an image can
set privacy controls that determine who can view the image. A photo can be
flagged as either public or private.[39] Private images are visible by default
only to the uploader, but they can also be marked as viewable by friends and/or
family. Privacy settings also can be decided by adding photographs from a
user's photostream to a "group pool".
4. Filtering
In
March 2007, Flickr added new content filtering controls that let members
specify by default what types of images they generally upload (photo,
art/illustration, or screenshot) and how "safe" (i.e.,
unlikely to offend others) their images are, as well as specify that
information for specific images individually.[52] Individual images are assigned to one
of three categories: "safe", "moderate", and
"restricted".[53] Users can specify the same criteria
when searching for images. There are some restrictions on searches for certain
types of users: non-members must always use SafeSearch, which omits images
noted as potentially offensive, while members whose Yahoo accounts indicate
that they are underage may use SafeSearch or moderate SafeSearch, but cannot
turn SafeSearch off completely. The system achieves a fairly good separation of
family-friendly photos and adult content; generic image searches normally
produce no pornographic results, with the visibility of adult content
restricted to users and dedicated Flickr communities who have opted into
viewing it.[53]
5. Licensing
Flickr
offers users the ability to either release their images under certain common
usage licenses or label them as "all
rights reserved".
The licensing options primarily include the Creative Commons 2.0 attribution-based and minor
content-control licenses – although jurisdiction and version-specific licenses
cannot be selected. As with "tags", the site allows easy searching of only those
images that fall under a specific license.[54]

Slideshare
1.
Uploading your presentations
At the time of writing SlideShare
supports the following file formats, each of which is uploaded in the same
manner: Presentations: ppt, pps and pot, pptx, ppsx and potx (PowerPoint), pdf,
odp (OpenOffice), Google Docs, and Apple Keynote 09.
Documents & Spreadsheets: doc,
docx, rtf, xls (MSOffice), odt and ods (OpenOffice) Google Docs, and pdf.
2.
Privacy and permissions
·
Everyone
– presentations are viewable by everybody
·
Only
me – Private, only viewable by me when logged in
·
All
my contacts – viewable by anybody on my contact list(s)
3.
Tips for creating presentations to
upload on SlideShare.
·
The
minimum font size that will be legible is 14pt.
·
Bright
backgrounds are often difficult to view
·
Users
viewing the presentation cannot click links within the presentation so ensure
that the full URLS are displayed on the page so that any interested users can
find out more themselves.
4.
Using SlideShare to source learning materials
Searching and viewing for
presentations
The search results list keyword(s)
with details such as number of views, downloads, number of slides and publish
date to help identify suitable matches. Searches can also be made by relevance:
·
Slideshow
(relevance, latest, views and times downloaded)
·
User
(most slideshows, date joined)
·
Group/event
(Most slideshows and most members)
SlideShare also provides a set of
quick search tabs e.g. “latest, most views” across the whole service.
- Commenting on a presentation
Registered members and guests can post
comments. Guests are effectively anonymous. The comments appear below the
presentation and can provide useful feedback and constructive criticism.
- Embedding a presentation
One of the key benefits of using
SlideShare is that presentations that have been made available for sharing can
be directly embedded into any web page where you have edit rights to that page.
This means that instead of having to leave your page to view a presentation,
the viewer can see the presentation where you have embedded it.
- Downloading other people’s presentations
Content publishers have the option to
allow anybody to download the original presentation media (PowerPoint / Word /
Keynote etc). This option is useful for anybody wanting to make the
presentation available for adaptation (under Creative Commons licence) or for
use offline.
- -Multimedia content
SlideShare will display the visual
contents of any presentation such as text and images. It has recently been
updated (May 2009) to allow the embedding of Youtube video and MP3 audio. Audio
can now be uploaded directly to SlideShare or hosted externally thus creating a
‘slidecast’. (see below “Adding synchronised Audio = slidecast”)
- Adding synchronised Audio = slidecast
Any presentation can have audio
synchronised to its slides. The audio can be embedded into the presentation
directly or hosted elsewhere and is linked to the presentation using the
built-in synchronisation tool.
